The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences

About The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences

In January 2008, work started on the development of The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences. The purpose is to strengthen and streamline the marine sciences infrastructure and therefore create a national and international resource for research in the marine sciences. The Lovén Centre consists of the two research stations, the Tjärnö Marine Biological Laboratory and the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, as well as the research ship R/V Skagerak.

The research station at Kristineberg was created in 1877 on the initiative of Sven Lovén. Up to 2007, it was run by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in close partnership with the University of Gothenburg. From 2008, the station has been run by the University of Gothenburg.

The Tjärnö Laboratory was opened in 1963. The large number of students who were there in the 1960's, together with widespread interest in the marine environment, meant that course activities needed to find new premises and facilities for their operations. The decision was made to establish a laboratory at Tjärnö by the Kosterfjord.
